The Bay Area Meteorite

It was incredible.  A friend and I were walking down the street in Berkeley, California, when she yelled out, "Look a shooting star!"  I looked up, and realized that it was not a shooting star, but a small meteorite falling from the sky.  It started with what looked like a bright yellow light that slowly faded to green as it got closer to the ground, and just before it broke the horizon, it disintegrated.  It was absolutely stunning, and something I had never seen before.  Needless to say I made an enormous wish.

This phenomenon apparently happens all over the world various times throughout the day, but the reason why I was so intrigued by this was because it happened about 24 hours after a meteor hit Russia which injured about 1,100 people.  Yes, it looked amazing, and one of the most spectacular sights I've ever witnessed, but also somewhat scary because of what happened in Russia only a day before.  For more information, check the links I've posted below:

  1. Hi Dakota,
Nice story about the meteorite. I never observed one, but shooting stars many times, especially when you're expected the least. I, somehow, always liked to look at the sky at night. When I lived in Santa Fe, the sky was always clear. I often saw double rainbow in daylight and the milky way surrounded by sparkling stars in a dark half globe sky.

  2. I can relate to the feeling. A few months ago, Some of my friends and I witnessed the meteor that hit the ladies house in Novato. I was standing outside my house talking to some friends and we heard what seemed like a large jet. One of my friends point to the sky with a startled look on his face, as if he had just seem an UFO. As we all looked up, I witness an extremely bright light moving at an unbelievable speed, and then disappeared just beyond the hills in San Rafael. I was shocked the next morning when I turned on the news and seen the report of the meteor, which stroke a woman's house in Novato. I have to say for the next week or so I keep my eyes on the skies more so as a cautionary measure. At the time of the incident me and my friends talked about it as an once in a life time phenomenon and made comments about how cool it was, but deep down inside I know we all were a little startled to say the lease.

  4. It is always amazing to witness anything from space approach earth. I wish i would have seen the meteorite because I would have been ecstatic. Unlike this guy when he witnessed the meteorite in russia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgCLMI3fgn0(copy paste). There are meteorites almost every night you can witness if you gaze at the sky at night, although not as big as the one you saw, they are still very impressive. The links you provided were great and from reputable sources which made this a solid post

    1. True indeed Dakota, the things that go on in the heavens are amazing and astonishing. At this stage in my life i am not surprised at the phenomenon that takes place in our world. You are right in stating that the meteorite racing across the sky was a beautiful sight, but I am most touched by how you thought about the lives that were impacted by something so beautiful. I enjoyed reading your blog post, nice work.

  5. The same thing happened to me and my sister that night. We were stuck in Lucas valley with our two dogs with my sisters keys locked in the car for hours! Wen we just fed up and cold and tired my sister said the same thing.... " look a shooting star!" Then after making my wish just to be sure it was the same concept, I shouted back to her " no honey, that was a meteor!" it was so amazingly breathtaking and kind of seemed like we got stuck for a reason and that was to witness that together. Pretty cool.
